Katie Beckett Waiver
Autism is not only emotionally taxing on parents, it can be financially taxing as well. The very first assistance program I refer EVERYONE to in the state of TN is the Katie Beckett program. This state funded program is not income based. After acceptance into the program families are given a yearly stipend to use on a variety of services. Traditional therapies, non traditional therapies, respite care (including babysitters), medical equipment, even zoo tickets! It is an amazing program that is available to TN residents with children who have both physical and intellectual special needs.
I have linked the main page below to apply and learn more about Katie Beckett. Each child approved for Katie Beckett is assigned a case worker who will guide you through the process and stay in touch with you throughout the year.
*When you apply for Katie Beckett the state will automatically apply for Tenncare for your child. Tenncare is our state's medicaid. While traditionally income based, eligibility is also determined by your child's diagnosis. If you received a letter that you were denied, don't panic! It could mean you were denied only for the Medicaid portion, NOT the Katie Beckett waiver.
Tennessee Early Intervention Services or "TEIS"
TIES is a state funded program for kids up to 5 years of age (as long as they are enrolled by their 3rd birthday). Like Katie Beckett, this program is not limited to only children with autism. However, unlike Katie Beckett, this program provides intervention to your child rather than providing direct financial assistance. In order to enroll your child in TIES you will need a referral from your pediatrician as well as a developmental evaluation.
Tenncare
You might think that state Medicaid is solely income based, but I encourage every family to explore this as an insurance option. Depending on any additional diagnoses your child might have along autism, they could qualify for Tenncare. Especially if your child was born prematurely. Take it from a former NICU nurse, you might qualify!!!
